Diderot is also known as the author of the dialogue, Le Neveu de Rameau Rameau's Nephew , upon which many articles and sermons about consumer desire have been based. His articles included many topics of the Enlightenment. As a philosopher Diderot speculated on free will and held a completely materialistic view of the universe; he suggested all human behavior is determined by heredity. He therefore warned his fellow philosophers against an overemphasis on mathematics and against the blind optimism that sees in the growth of physical knowledge an automatic social and human progress.
He rejected the Idea of Progress. In his opinion, the aim of progressing through technology was doomed to fail.

Struktur und Lesarten des Discours de la servitude volontaire. By Friedrich Rackwitz. By Marc Schachter. By Sebastian Sobecki. Abstract: In this article we present the final observations of our doctoral research approaching the problem of the decomposition of phrasemes in poetic texts in six different languages. Having presented some theoretical concepts as a basis of our study, we analyse here some semantic and stylistic regularities of decomposition observed during the work with the multilingual corpus. By doing this, we highlight the generalities as an important issue of our research.

Arguments referring back to the first beginnings and relating them to the present tend to be especially attractive. Stories of this kind — the so-called aitia — can convey a sense of education, of venerable antiquity, of continuity, of religious awe, or they can just be entertaining. In any case, they are as prominent nowadays as they were in antiquity. In this interdisciplinary conference we want to shed light on the fascination with origins from different perspectives: how is the power of origins employed in historiography, in literature ancient and modern, in art, in religious contexts, in philosophy, or in political debate?
We are interested in exploring a wide range of case studies, in order to reflect on our overarching question: what is it that holds the different forms of aitia together? How can we understand this phenomenon in general terms?
What is it that makes the origin such a fascinating and powerful form of discourse? Possible overarching questions may include, but are by no means limited to the following:. If you are interested in participating, we would ask you to send us an abstract of circa words by June 15, We would like to circulate the papers one month in advance of the conference and envision a 45 min.

Although dramatic, lyric, and narrative epic poetry have always been prominent within the main view of what Greek poetry is about, many works do not fit easily within these categories.
Whereas traditionally they have been labelled didactic poetry, following in the tradition of Hesiod, this didactic frame is only part of what characterises these texts. They challenge traditional ideas about what good poetry should look like, and invite us to think about the distinction between poets venturing into technical subject and specialists expressing themselves in verse. Is poetry merely a convenient vehicle for the preservation of knowledge, or does art serve a more aesthetic purpose?
This conference, to be held in Soeterbeeck on 12 July Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands aims to approach such technical poetry from different viewpoints: as art and as expression of knowledge. The Hellenistic period is generally seen as a time of expanded horizons and shifting frontiers, with a diffusion of Greek culture throughout the Mediterranean and the Near East unprecedented in any previous era. In the shadow of omnipresent connectivity and exchange, many communities fostered an identity of place.
